Welcome to the Nordic Film Festival 2016 and the panel discussion !
The Danish, Norwegian and Swedish Embassies in Dar es Salaam are coming together with the Goethe-Institut to bring you the best in Nordic films.
With 66% of the population under the age of 25 and set to rise, encouraging young people to participate as active citizens is important for Tanzania’s future. Therefore, in line with Nordic democratic values, this year’s theme for Dar’s very own Nordic Film Festival is ‘Youth & Citizenship’.
Screenings of exceptional Nordic films will take place every Thursday during the month of November at the Goethe-Institut. Inspired by the Nordic films and the screening of the widely acclaimed Tanzanian short film ‘Shoe Shine’ (2013) on the final evening, the festival will conclude in a panel discussion on the role of youth in Tanzanian society.
SHOESHINE – by Amil Shivji, Tanzania 2013, 24 min
Set in a busy street of Dar es Salaam, a shoeshine boy offers us a conscious and subconscious perspective of the space and people of his city ranging from the local politician to university students as well as the neighbor tea maker. This short-film is both a social commentary and an artistic depiction of the life, aspirations and perspectives of a working child.
The short movie is followed by an open forum under the umbrella theme "Youth and citizenship".
