Director: Martin Persiel, HD CAM SR, Farbe, 99 Min., 2011/12 Berlin 2011: Old friends from former GDR times meet again at the funeral of their mutual friend Denis „Panik“ Paraceck and remember: Skateboarding was their biggest passion; Denis was hard to beat on his boldness with the skateboard or “Rollbrett” as it was called in the GDR. In small episodes the 80s are evoked, a time in which the skaters used to be misfits, rebellious and far away from the government’s socialist production plan. The centre of the scene was Berlin Alexanderplatz in the eastern part of the city, where they could improve and show their skills to wondering passers-by. This ain’t California describes a piece of anarchic subculture in a socialist system.
