The Art of Life in South Africa by Daniel Magaziner

By Ike's Books and Collectables

Thu, May 18. 3:30PM - 6PM

Event Details

Yale historian Daniel Magaziner radically reframes apartheid-era South Africa in his new book, The Art of Life in South Africa. Achille Mbembe praised the book as “a richly suggestive and moving contribution to South African intellectual history.” South Africa’s apartheid government ran a school for the training of African art teachers at Indaleni, KwaZulu-Natal, from 1952 to 1981. Magaziner’s book gifts the reader with a beautifully illustrated history of the school; its students, teachers, art, ideas, and politics that led to the school’s founding. The Art of Life in South Africa gives us fully-formed lives and remarkable insights into life under segregation and apartheid. The author will be in conversation with Cedric Nunn.
