The Stellenbosch University Choir (Matie Choir) is comprised of 120 students from various academic and cultural backgrounds. The Matie choir is the oldest and most celebrated choir in South Africa. André van der Merwe has been the choir master since 2003. The choir is currently ranked as the number 1 amateur choir in the world. At the World Choir Games, in Latvia, in 2014 the choir won all three of their competition categories, achieving the highest mark in the history of the competition with 99%. In 2016 the choir again won all three of their competition categories, achieving the highest mark of the competition with 96% at World Choir Games in Russia. In 2016 the choir was also crowned audience and overall winner in the first Varsity Sing! Competition. Die US Koor beklee reeds die afgelope 5 jaar die nommer 1 posisie volgens die Interkultuur-ranglys, en het in 2016 tydens die Wêreldkoorspele in Sochi, Rusland, al die kategorieë waarin hulle deelgeneem het, gewen.
