Due to popular demand, another Roof Inspector Training Course will be hosted at the Institute for Timber Construction South Africa (ITC-SA) head office (SAFCA Building, 6 Hulley Road, Isando) from 21-23 November 2017 (from 8 am to 4 pm each day). The cost is R5500 [excl. VAT] per person. Course aims: The chief aims of the course are as follows: To enable any technical person to be able to do roof inspections with knowledge and insight To enable registered persons to sign off roofs on their own, knowing that they speak with authority Course outline: Tuesday 21 November 8.00 Registration at ITC, 6 Hulley Road, Isando 8.30 Basic Roof Terminology, including: Rafters, tiebeams, webs Gables, hips Truncated hips, true span Overhangs, cantilevers Prefabricated/bolted methods 10.00 Tea/coffee 10.20 Basics of timber design, including loading, and information of relevant codes. Permissible stress and limit state loading explained. Tributary loading. 12.30 Finger lunch provided 13.30 Bracing in roofs in general: difference in lightly loaded versus heavily loaded roofs. Experience from the field through slides and pictures 15.00 Explanation of the roofing Industry in SA: who the players are, who is responsible for what. Short intro of ITC-SA by Amanda Obbes, National Coordinator 16.00 End of Day 1 Wednesday 22 November 8.30 Rafter bracing: why necessary different systems of bracing, study standard bracing details 10.00 Tea/coffee 10.20 Tiebeam and web bracing: standard bracing details, case studies of failures with pictures 12.30 Finger lunch provided 13.30 Discussion of paperwork required. Discuss who is responsible for paperwork. 14.45 Site visit to a timber roof under construction. On-site guidance and discussion (bring own hard hats and closed shoes). 16.00 End of Day 2 Thursday 23 November 8.30 Site visit to a different site to see a timber roof in distress and the effects of ineffective bracing (bring own hard hats and closed shoes). 10.00 Tea-coffee 10.20 Discussion of site observations 11.00 Discussion of ethics in regard roof inspection 11.30 Discussion of making a business from roof inspections 12.00 Questions and answers 12.30 Finger lunch included 13.30 Slide show of non-compliant roofs and the consequences 14.30 Non-compulsory written evaluation (certificates for successful candidates will be awarded) Note: candidates wishing to obtain certificates will be assessed continually over the course during discussions and especially during the two site visits. All candidates will receive the ITC manuals for roof inspections. Delegates to preferably have a year or more of post-matric education with science and mathematics, matric with involvement in roofs or Recognised Prior Learning (RPL). Engineers who are interested in expanding their knowledge and expertise in timber roof structures will greatly benefit from this informative course.
