RETIRE THE HOE – HOW THE EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN IN THE CHANGING WORLD OF WORK CAN STEER UGANDA TO PROSPERITY
On March 8, 2017, Uganda will join the rest of the world to commemorate International Women’s Day under the theme, “Women’s Economic Empowerment in the Changing World of Work.”
On behalf of the Women’s Movement in Uganda, the Uganda Women’s Network (UWONET) in partnership with a number of Women’s Rights Organisations invite you to a press briefing which will take place on Monday 6th March 2017 at 9.00am at the Uganda Museum.
The women’s movement acknowledges the role government has played towards uplifting the status of women mainly through progressive legislation such as the Domestic Violence Act, The Prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation Act, and Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act among others.
As we commemorate International Women’s Day 2017, we highlight the persistent impediments to gender equality and women’s empowerment which include Gender Based Violence, the heavy burden of care work, abuse of women’s labour rights, land rights violations, lack of access to productive resources and finance, abuse of the rights of human rights defenders among others.
We believe that without government addressing the above challenges, our march to middle income status is not tenable. Therefore the purpose of the press briefing is to call on government to appreciate, prioritize and tap into women’s potential to transform Uganda. Together with other actors gender equality and equity is possible.
