Synopsis
Set in Ghana, the play takes the audience on a captivating journey through abstract narratives and symbolic imagery.
The story revolves around three siblings: a woman, men, and the stereotypes that surround them. The woman yearns to break free from societal constraints and dreams of becoming a king, disguising herself as her brother. The eldest brother is captured and sold into slavery, forced to navigate a foreign land. Meanwhile, the youngest brother, destined to be king, has no interest in ruling and instead seeks solace in his art and exploration.
Through a mesmerizing fusion of movement, music, and visual imagery, Nyanabasa aims to reconstruct the traditional concept of storytelling. Verbal aesthetics take a backseat, allowing pictures and suggested ambience to transport the audience into a realm of imagination. The production explores the rich cultural heritage of Ghanaian lore, paying homage to the country's storytelling traditions while pushing the boundaries of contemporary theatre.
