Literary Crossroads: Chronists of Change with Masande Ntshanga and SJ Naudé Tuesday 2 June, 19H00 Goethe-Institut, 119 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood 2193 This evening will offer insights into two different literary landscapes of Africa and two different approaches how to respond to the world as a writer and intellectual. Masande Ntshanga is the winner of the 2013 pen International New Voices Award. He was born in East London in 1986 and graduated with a degree in Film and Media and an Honours degree in English Studies from uct, where he became a creative writing fellow, completing his Masters in Creative Writing under the Mellon Mays Foundation. He received a Fulbright Award and an nrf Freestanding Masters scholarship. His stories have appeared in Laugh It Off, itch, Imago and Habitat. He has also written for Rolling Stone magazine. Pulsating with passion, loss, and melancholia, SJ Naudé’s collection The Alphabet of Birds is filled with music, art, architecture, myth, the search for origins and the shifting relationships between people. “Cool and intelligent, unsettling and deeply felt, Naudé’s voice is something new in South African writing” (Damon Galgut) Literary Crossroads is a new series of talks where South African writers meet colleagues from all over the continents and from the African diaspora to discuss trends, topics and themes prevalent in their literatures today.
