Event Details
Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001, Lamu comes to life during the Lamu Cultural Festivals, which take place over four days to showcase shared heritage and musical traditions from civilizations that have influenced the Swahili culture over the centuries.
The Festival highlights Lamu’s heritage in a carnival atmosphere featuring traditional dances, swimming races, traditional Swahili poetry, Henna painting, Bao competition, football tournaments, traditional displays, exhibitions, and live musical performances.
The two most popular activities remain a spectacle for both the local and visitor. The dhow race which brings together the towns finest to compete, and the town’s most endearing symbol - the donkey race.
Apart from attending the Festival, we will get to enjoy an array of activities which include; sampling the street food, have a drink at the Floating Bar, visit Lamu House & Swahili House, enjoy a walk through the Lamu Old Town and visiting the donkey sanctuary.
