International dance show Flying Solo comes to Noyam Dance Institute, Dodowa.
In a collaboration between UK based ENSEMBLE dance company and Noyam Dance Institute three international dance artists with roots in the UK, Ghana and the Caribbean bring Flying Solo to Noyam in Dodowa this October. Flying Solo explores their artistry in relation to ‘home’, their roots and the core of who they are in an intimate show that highlights their uniqueness and their togetherness in equal measure. The dance artists support each other in a show that allows their individuality and selfhood to unfold; what unites them is the courageous, vulnerable act of solo performance, and how it calls the dancer to probe at their very being and embark on a journey of the spirit, history and flesh.
How do we know ourselves, be ourselves, remain ourselves? How do we grow by meeting different places, different people, and stay true? Maybe first we must get lost, honestly, openly, fiercely; and be brave enough to go right back ‘home’.
Over 2019 the Flying Solo dancers have embarked on a pilgrimage which has challenged them to perform alone in the spaces of their past, together in spaces far afield across theatres, tents, parks and forest in the UK and Ghana and to return alone again close to where they each call home now. This show sees them in the middle of their pilgrimage, performing together at Noyam.
Noyam is the home of Noyam dance company, founded by Francis Nii Yartey, now run by his son Nii Tete Yartey, one of the Flying Solo artists. This performance marks Noyam opening its doors again in 2019 as Nii Tete steps into Directing his father’s company. The Flying Solo artists will come together here to probe their core beings further, through the challenge and beauty of solo performance, in an environments close to home for Nii-Tete and very far from home for the other two artists Hayley J S Matthews and Tyrone Isaac-Stuart.Tyrone Isaac-Stuart is a hip-hop dancer, contemporary dancer, and musician who makes both his own dance and live music work and combines the two disciplines, Hayley J S Matthews is a contemporary dancer and vocalist and Nii-Tete Yartey a contemporary and Traditional African dancer. Come along, and they will dance you into their hearts and solo experience in a process that seeks an intimate alternative to independence.
