At a time when Uganda is receiving extraordinary numbers of refugees and migrants, supporting young people in responding to the #RefugeeCrisis2017 is a key priority for #ISFiT & #ACI.
The Dialogue on Refugee Crisis, which is actually a follow-up seminar by Ugandan #ISFiT2017 Dialogue Groups participants in Trondheim, Norway, seeks to provide a safe space for future leaders from different sides of the refugee crisis to meet on equal grounds and share experiences.
Dialogue, a known tool for peace-building in practice, is a valuable and inspiring process in exploring points of view beyond ethnic, religious, cultural, political and geographical boundaries.
After the initial emergency phase, Uganda must ensure the social, cultural, political and economic integration of the new arrivals. Uganda is now home to 1.25 million refugees, including 898,000 South Sudanese who have fled civil war and famine. For years a progressive policy allowing refugees to obtain a plot of land, start businesses and access healthcare and education has proved a godsend for people from Uganda’s unstable neighbours. But now the unprecedented influx from South Sudan, coupled with food shortages, drought, discrimination and high unemployment, means that hospitality is waning, especially in some areas where refugees now outnumber the indigenous populations.
Despite these unrelenting challenges, our Dialogue will be a platform to demonstrate the strength and resilience of the forcibly displaced people, and the willingness of future leaders to actively engage with them and thereafter take the challenges they face seriously. Therefore, this seminar will bring a wide range of relevant stakeholders who will focus on exchanging ideas and global perspectives to find feasible solutions to create a better future for refugees and resound the voice of young people.
We look forward to you having you as we stand #WithRefugees !
