THE DRIVING QUESTION: What should a school playground built with earth and other local materials for rural Africa look like? How should we design and build a natural playground to be durable, beautiful and safe?
We are organizing a building workshop to bring together a team of designers, engineers, landscape architects and playground enthusiasts to collaborate and build an innovative playground to promote the importance of play for the development of elementary school children in rural Ghana. The workshop will be based on site at Abetenim, a village about 40 km from the city of Kumasi. This is our goal: to construct a model playground “Designed For the Future” by tapping playground ideas that have worked for children 4 to 10 years of age. It will be constructed through use of community labor and abundant local materials involving earth, sand and wood. The rural playground is to provide the children of Abetenim primary school with a fun place to play and learn life-skills, such as cooperation, socialization, sharing, teamwork, trading and competition, which are essential skills in a 21st century.
Be a part of this! Let’s create change where it is most needed. You’ll gain an in-depth understanding of the local issues and practical experience, as we immerse, explore and learn abroad.
COST: Food and accommodation 120€/week; project contribution 400€ (flight costs are not included).
