Dine and drink while taking in top tunes at this trendy bar every Wednesday
There are few things worse than a Wednesday. It’s the furthest point between weekends, you’re already worn out from Monday and Tuesday and you’ve still got to slog through another two 9-to-5 sessions before you get a break. Fortunately though, The Odyssey Gastropub on Cape Town’s Bree Street is hurtling to the rescue and hosting an appropriately themed blues live music night to pull people out of that gloomy mid-week dip.
Strumming to a start in the restaurant’s trendy upstairs area every Wednesday at 8pm, the weekly gig features a different local band (some up-and-coming, some more renowned) every time, and all ensembles play a set that dabbles in the sultry blues or folk genres. The acts never repeat with the month, and for a full line-up
Guests can opt to match the musical to-do with a few tipples from the bar; The Odyssey serves up a range of proudly South African drinks, including a selection of SAB draughts, an assortment of local craft beers, a wide array of Cape wines, a couple of classic cocktails and a few high-end Mzansi liquors.
Otherwise, melody lovers can make a whole evening of it and book a table for dinner. As a bar that also functions as a top-notch restaurant (hence the term ‘gastropub’), the CBD haunt conjures up a range of delicious dishes that are not only rich with flavour, but fundamentally good too, as owner Lorenzo Magni is adamant about sourcing responsible cultivated ingredients from principled suppliers. The menu does change occasionally, but visitors can expect items like beef carpaccio crusted with thyme and black pepper, braised lamb shank, free-range burgers cheese and charcuterie boards.
