The Ngorongoro Crater, which covers more than 15 km in diameter, covered with huge herds of zebra and antelope and surrounded by walls over 650 meters high, is perhaps the most famous natural reserve in Africa and since 1978, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside the Crater you can find virtually every major African mammal and in the salt lake, which is located on the bottom of the crater, you can see flocks of pink flamingos wade in water in search of food. It is estimated that the crater occurred about two million years ago and that it might have reached a height similar to that of Kilimanjaro, only to fall inward and give rise to the present structure. The structure of the crater is circular, with a diameter of about 20 km. While on board, which is approximately 2300 meters, the climate is cold and often foggy inside the caldera, the air is hot and dry and the vegetation changes rapidly depending on the season. The Masai people live there with their herds even though since 1979 can no longer cultivate the land. The Masai are also allowed to descend into the crater to graze at sunset.
