Article 32 of the Constitution of Kenya states that, “every person has the right to freedom of conscience, religion, thought, belief and opinion."
However, too often this article is used to protect only "religious" beliefs. What about other beliefs?
Indeed, Humanists in Kenya don't hear about freedom of thought or freedom of conscience as often as they hear about religious freedom. That's why they suggest using the far better umbrella term of "freedom of belief" in order to prevent "religious freedom" from becoming a Trojan horse for religious privilege.
The International Humanist and Ethical Union - IHEU and the Kenyan Humanist Association invite everyone to discuss this important and challenging theme during the first African Café Humaniste, organised in Nairobi on 17 March.
The three main speakers of the event will be:
- Bizimana Alex, lawyer at "Sichangi & Company Advocates" and graduate of Kenya School of Lawand Uganda Christian University
- Achieng Akena, lawyer, activist and Executive Director of The Pan African Citizens Network - PACIN
- Harrison Mumia, secular activist and president of Atheists In Kenya.
