Event Details

…Be part of the workshop to build one of the Top 20 Designs from Mud House Design 2014 competition for Ghana to help the local overcome the stereotype that mud architecture is architecture for the very poor. CONTACT: info@nkafoundation.org / www.nkafoundation.org for application form. From January 2015 to December 2016, Nka Foundation is organizing mud building workshops to build some of the shortlisted designs from our Mud House Design 2014 competition for Ghana. Students can participate for internship, thesis, or volunteer just for learning-by-doing on a vernacular African project. Each workshop will run for 10 weeks based on site at Abetenim in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. For each workshop, we seek students and recent graduates of architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and a film/video specialist to collaborate by taking up their parts of the build. For example, the film/video specialist is to produce a video documentation of the workshop, the interior designer will be responsible for the interior spaces and the landscape architect will help with the landscaping of the mud unit. Join us! Let’s reinvent the African mud house together! For a list of the workshops visit: http://nkaprojects.boards.net/thread/31/prototyping-usability-testing and see all the design entries in the competition: http://nkaprojects.boards.net/thread/30/submitted-entries-1st-list WORKSHOP PROCESS AND STRUCTURE: Workshop will begin with site-specific tours of the local Ashanti architecture and talking to the local people to gain awareness and knowledge of the local building traditions. Taking into account the site conditions and discussions from site-specific tours, the workshop team will review the design, complete the design process and build their proposal with local labor. Accommodation will be of guest house at the village. Most evenings will be used for reviewing workshop progress along with informal discussions and presentations by workshop leader and international participants. By alternating work and dialogues, we hope to uncover the mechanics of earth building namely design, budget, site analysis, and construction strategy. WHO CAN PARTICIPATE: Open to students and recent graduates of architecture, interior design, product design, engineering and landscape architecture from around the world. WHERE: Abetenim Arts Village near Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. COST: Accommodation is €60 per week and food is €60 per week plus project contribution of €400. HOW TO APPLY: info@nkafoundation.org / www.nkafoundation.org for application form. NKA FOUNDATION … Serving the Underserved Communities www.nkafoundation.org / info@nkafoundation.org Nka Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in the United States. Nka exists to serve underserved communities. At Abetenim in the Ashnati Region of Ghana, we are building an arts village designed as a learning center to provide stable places for creative people from the region and other countries to live, work, learn and create. We do this through investigating and incorporating vernacular materials and methods of construction used in the region to create buildings informed by our own design aesthetics.
