The book ‘Home from Home for South African Visual Artists - Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, France, 1983-2014’ celebrates the fiftieth anniversary since the Cité was established, and thirty years since the SAAA (known since 1998 as the South African National Association for the Visual Arts, SANAVA) acquired its three studios on the banks of the Seine.
The book serves as a record in paying tribute to France and its institutions in reaffirming its belief (referring to the apartheid years and crippling, comprehensive, international sanctions) that the freedom of the arts should be respected and not penalised due to political considerations. The book also addresses the gradual, chronological dismantling of South African apartheid legislation (which for many years had a serious impact on the arts and artists).
A list is given of about 350 local visual artists who enjoyed a residency there. Images and reports rendered by some of the artists, randomly selected, are displayed. Guidelines are given about the procedure to follow in applying for a residency and the conditions set by the Cité.
