(Disclaimer: Long post but worthy of reading) NUTS+ Explosive suspense and psychological drama as sex-pest Step-father ruins daughter’s life amidst wanton sexual abuse, family and social power dynamics. Having been deserted by her biological father at an early age, Claudia (Helena Waithera) was adopted by stepfather Donald (Bilal Wanjau), second husband to her mother, Agnes (Nungo Marrianne) and powerful county governor who immediately began to sexually molest her. She pleaded with her mother to stop him but she passively looked on and refused to intervene and this continued over the years. So, while desperately looking for love, she quickly married a man but the rocky marriage failed and she aborted his unborn baby. She then enrolled herself for part-time studies and moved into her own apartment. Attempting to leave the unbearable past behind, Claudia spent her life avoiding her parents and locking her poisonous secret in the depth of her soul. Unable to forgive herself and come to terms with her childhood silence, she responded with denial, suppression, and more silence, masterfully veiling her wounds with an eloquent facade of brazen self-assuredness. In response to the ever tormenting secret, she prostituted herself openly and publicly, constructing herself as one who has nothing to hide. Shielding the vulnerable child hidden within, she cultivated the self-image of a bold, unashamed woman, who sees through any pretence and self-deceit, pointedly, courageously, and mockingly looking truth in the eye and unmasking any weakness and anxiety. However, one day, in her illicit practice, she encountered a high profile client who became violent as he forcefully tried to rape her. Fearing for her life, she decided to fight back, eventually killing him. She was arrested for his murder but to avoid scandal, her parents tried to have her declared mentally incompetent. She was then quickly diagnosed by two psychiatrists as being incapable of standing trial. The prosecution’s efforts to declare Claudia insane and prevent the legal proceeding are motivated by the desire to shield and protect Claudia’s stepfather from humiliating public exposure. The prosecution attempts to uphold Donald’s unwritten social right to preserve his honour and silence any damaging evidence that may put him to shame. The prosecution believes that Donald’s shameful lifestyle is the potentially damaging truth to be hushed for the governor’s benefit. This tear-jerking psycho-legal case history is a play that moves you ... you are in court watching a woman fight for what she believes is her total future. Other characters in this spell-binding drama include defending lawyer John (Bilal Mwaura), prosecutor David (Bokeba Mbotela), Justice Morgan (Angel Waruinge), court officer Harry (Peter Otieno aka Dr. Pepe) and the psychiatrist, Herbert (Mourad Sadat) FESTIVAL OF CREATIVE ARTS brings you this thrilling world-famous dramatic courtroom play with hilarious consequences: November: Fri 25th at 6 & 8pm, Sat 26th at 3, 6 & 8pm and Sun 27th at 3 & 6pm at Kenya National Theatre.
