By African Centre for Migration and Society (ACMS)
Cities have historically produced, extracted, subjectified, and subverted. Sub-Saharan Africa's population is moving into and through cities, making them gateways to unknown economic, social, and political futures. Solidarity, sociality, and creativity will evolve with urbanism—cities, suburbs, high-rises, and informal settlements. These spaces remain poorly understood, and their significance is overlooked and underestimated.
The African Centre for Migration and Society (ACMS) at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg is working on a project focusing on gateway neighbourhoods in Accra, Nairobi and Johannesburg to explore how people living in fragmented, uncertain, and mobile cities are making futures for themselves and the urban spaces. As part of the 'Atlas of Uncertainty' project, we are running an open call across the three cities with our partner institutions. We invite artists to interpret the gathered survey and qualitative migration data to create works that interact with the key themes.
We have partnered with Terra Alta and the Foundation for Contemporary Art, Ghana to invite Accra-based artists to an information workshop at 16:00 on Thursday November 30th 2023, ahead of an artist open call.
The workshop will present the key research themes, the process and requirements of the call, and a panel discussion between researchers and artists.
Whether you're an early career or an experienced artist, this could be an opportunity to immerse yourself in creativity, connect with like-minded individuals, and showcase your work to a broader audience. We invite artists specialising in the following media: photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, digital art, mixed media, textile art, and ceramics.
We look forward to seeing you there.
