We are thrilled to invite you to participate in
MapMyCommunity, a one-day youth-led initiative by the
World Inspiring Network, celebrating
Open Data Day (ODD) 2025. This event aims to empower 15 young people in the Central Region of Ghana with mapping skills to identify and address community issues, fostering data-driven development and sustainable solutions.
Event Details:
- Dates: March 6, 2025
- Location: University of Education, Winneba, Central Region, Ghana
- Target Audience: Young people aged 18-35
Objectives of MapMyCommunity:
- Equip young people with the skills and knowledge to use OpenStreetMap and open data to map their communities and identify local issues.
- Foster a sense of ownership and involvement among young people in addressing community challenges.
- Utilize the collected mapping data to create actionable plans for community development, focusing on infrastructure, environmental hazards, and access to essential services.
- Raise awareness about the importance of open data and its potential to address complex local issues, and empower participants to advocate for change through storytelling and social media.
- Facilitate connections between young people, local experts, educational institutions, tech companies, and government agencies to support sustainable community development initiatives.
What to Expect:
Morning Session: Workshop on Open Data, OpenStreetMap, and Community Problem Identification:
- Description: Kick off the event with an engaging workshop where participants will be introduced to the concepts of Open Data and OpenStreetMap. Learn how these tools can be used to tackle complex local issues. Additionally, participants will be guided on how to identify and document problems in their communities, such as inadequate infrastructure, environmental hazards, and access to essential services.
- Activities: Interactive sessions, hands-on training, and group discussions.
- Outcome: Participants will gain foundational knowledge and skills in using Open Data and OpenStreetMap, and learn how to identify and document community issues.
Afternoon Session: Practical Mapping Sessions:
- Description: Participants will be divided into three groups to conduct practical mapping sessions in specific areas of the Central Region. Each group will focus on different aspects, such as infrastructure, environmental hazards, and access to services. The data collected will be used to create comprehensive maps of local communities.
- Activities: Fieldwork, data collection using smartphones.
- Outcome: Comprehensive maps highlighting areas affected by poverty, environmental hazards, and inadequate infrastructure.
Evening Session: Storytelling and Presentation of Findings:
- Description: The final session will focus on storytelling through social media to communicate the challenges facing their communities. Each group will present their findings, share their experiences, and discuss next steps. The best group will receive a gift for their effort.
- Activities: Social media workshops, group presentations, and certificate awards.
- Outcome: Enhanced communication skills, increased awareness of local issues, and actionable plans for community development.
