The connection between Ghana and New Orleans in America with Sweet Potatoes and Yams Festival
By: Queen Mrs. Alaina Paul-Mensah Native born New Orleans
Why are we having our Christian Sweet Potatoes and Yams Fest Celebration in Accra Ghana?
Accra is the Capital of Ghana where many come from all different regions of Africa to do business, trades and network.
Therefore at this time The Arts Center, Centre of National Culture that assist in stimulating the Ministry of Tourism seems to be the ideal location to have our Festivities.
Sweet potatoes and yams are the "vegetable crop" foods some of our ancestors took to the United Kingdom and America when they were sold by some high deity kings on Cape Coast and taken by force by some British Rebels during the Atlantic Slave Trade.
You may be thinking all our ancestors were taken aboard in shackles and chains. Not true, some Africans were seen as good workers and worked with the British to help transport our ancestors and to keep them in order doing their long journey across the Atlantic Ocean. Some Africans that have not been educated correctly will say Black Americans sold them into slavery. We, the decendants of your ancestors from Ghana and Nigeria did not sell you into slavery, we were not born at that time when slavery took place therefore how are we to have sold you Into slavery?
Slavery was going from the Arabs before it started on the coastline of Ghana. It was then high deity Kings in Ghana that sold their own people into Slavery first.
On their journey these selected African overseers had to teach the British on what foods our African ancestors ate. This is one of the ways how the vegetable crops sweet potatoes and yams were introduced further in the American and British cultures.
Our Ancestors ate Sweet Potatoes and Yams because it was a cheap food an during slavery they were poor, they could not afford a higher grade of food so they ate Sweet Potatoes and Yams. Sweet potatoes and yams filled their stomachs and gave them the natural vitamins needed to endure the long hot days of working sun up to sun down in the crop fields. Many of our ancestors after slavery settled in Louisiana in such cities as New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Alexandria, Donaldsonville, an States such as Atlanta, Mississippi, Florida, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, Southern Carolina, Washington DC, New York, California with cities such as Sacramento, Oakland, Los Angeles and the Caribbean Islands such as Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican and Republic
Sweet potatoes and yams are eaten worldwide by many cultures.
Here are some of the health benefits of why you should eat more Sweet Potatoes and Yams verse eating a white potato or what many know as chips and french fries.
In America we might only eat this veggie at Thanksgiving, but sweet potatoes are full of nutrients that make them worth having all year long.
They are naturally sweet roots in the morning glory family. It is said Native Americans from the 12 tribes were already growing sweet potatoes prior to the Atlantic Slave trade to America in 1492, these veggies are said to have grew in prior in Peru as early as 750 B.C.
This vegetable crop was named by Adam in the garden of Eden. Jehovah God gave Adam the authority to name all the crops and animals we enjoy and eat today.
This naturally sweet "vegetable crop" was given by Jehovah God to our African Ancestors in the beginning of time when he created the heavens an the earth.
In America our African Ancestors were able to quickly relate to Sweet Potatoes being grown from Native Americans because it was a familiar vegetable crop grown and eaten from different regions in their native country Africa and to specify a couple countries Ghana and Nigeria.
There are hundreds of types of sweet potatoes. Some have white or cream-colored flesh. Others are yellow, red, or purple. The "Covington" is the variety you're most likely to find at the store. It has pink skin and bright orange pulp.
While yams and sweet potatoes may look alike, a true yam is a tuber vegetable, like a regular potato.
